Crown Point Sheriff's House and Jail
Crown Point, IN 46307
This house dates back to 1882 and the jail was added in 1926. It is the location where John Dillinger made his notorious escape in 1934. To escape, he used jail-issued razor blades to carve a gun out of part of a wooden washboard. He then used shoe polish to stain it black. Dillinger was killed the next Sunday by Federal officiers in Chicago. The jail is said to have some lingering spirits who make themselves known by opening and closing cell doors, shaking cell bars, footsteps, voices and turning lights on and off.
